"So I got to thinking it might be fun to run a campaign based on plunder on the high seas, think pirates of the carribean and the classic pirate movies. Some amount of fantasy or none at all, undecided yet. This is a *very* preliminary interest-poll to see if anyone'd like it at all. I've yet to decide whether to base it on a known system like D&D (making it D&Sea instead, hah!) or to improvise rule-less along the way.
So, vote on the poll above and I'll see what I do with the info.
Parlay?"

There is a pirate RP out there. It's called 7th Sea, or something like that. Haven't ever played it - though I did gawk at the books when one of my friends brought 'em along... 2 years ago...
But yeah, it exists, might want to look into it - if nothing else than for the setting.
I might be interested, but it'll depend on the setting. If it's gonna be historic earth setting I won't be interested as the only credible female character in such a setting is a whore or a peasant woman. And I doubt I'd have much fun RPing a Tortuga whore...
...
Uhhhh scratch that, I think I'd have too much fun RPing a Tortuga whore - too much fun to post on a public forum *cough*
Anyhow, not much piracy for ze vimmins in historic earth setting. So gimme fantasy setting or whatever will work for giving female characters an equal chance at being credible pirates.

Actually, there *were* credible female pirates . . . 'course, they weren't all that feminine, but they were there.

I know about Marry Read and Anne Bonny, yes. BUT they were the exceptin to prove the rule.
No matter how much you can point out that there were a female pirate or two it doesn't change the fact that women a 150 years ago or more were either waiting for a man to marry them, already married, spinsters employed as governesses or similar positions or they were whores.
That's what I meant with credible. When I make a character I hate that the premise that makes my character possible is an exception to the rule or somesuch. No matter the setting, I aim to start with something that can qualify as normal.
Real female pirates don't need to be credible, since, you know.... they're real. Fictive stuff needs to be real, and that is exceedingly difficult with female chars in a male world. Heck it's difficult enough being female in a male workplace.
SO what do stories tell? Two out of how many pirates were women? Compared to how many women were commonly occupied? Sorry, no, unless it is a fictive setting, a female pirate *is* highly unlikely, whether you like it or not.
And don't even get me started on the point of feminine. Worst word ever invented.
