You open the old oaken door cautiously, peering into the large room that awaits - the caution is something newly acquired after nearly dying on a sword or a brief brush with madness in The Trophy Room. This place is quieter, more soothing, yet seems to brim with untold stories, the books shifting in excitement at a new visitor, whispering their secrets to one another.
The shelves are tall and dusty, spinning haphazardly upwards into gloom, ladders on wheels poised and at the ready to guide an adventurous soul to the works within. You open the door further and step inside, staring round at the tables and comfortable looking chairs.
You hear muttering, and a figure stalks past one of the shelves, then turns and sees you. She is rather short, wearing a voluminous dark skirt and black shirt with poet's sleeves, her long dark hair rather messily swept back into a bun, a few curling tendrils floating about her face. Her ears are slightly pointed, and hooked to those ears are black rimmed glasses, which she peers over at you. Her face breaks into a smile and she sets down the two books she was holding, wiping the dust from her hands, which are covered in laced fingerless leather gloves.
"Hello there. I'm one of the keepers of the keys for the Mansion, and The Librarian." You look down and see a large ring with several skeleton keys dangling from her waist. "Feel free to find me and inquire as to the state of things, I'll try to set you straight. We have six main areas of the library, with many and varied purposes."
She gestures behind her, and you see a large dusty seaman's chest, carved with ancient dark designs. "That is the Mimic's Chest, a place of admiration and continuation - don't be fooled by it's outer appearance, you'll find that many things in the mansion are not what they seem. There is the place for all fiction not of your own design. Caution is advised, as it's possible to let yourself be consumed by the contents."
"Down this way," she says, waving an arm to the left, in the direction a shelf laden with scrolls and bits of parchment, and from which you can hear faint singing, "lies the Songs of the Harpers. Poetry resides here, in all its forms. It is a place of great beauty and epic wonders, filled with the power words bring. Wander deeply here, as the greatest treasures sometimes lie hidden."
She looks down at one ofs the dusty tomes on the table, placing a gloved hand on the cover. "This is The Heroes Lorebook, filled with valiant characters, nefarious villians, gallant knights, and all other manner of creatures. You may find yourself within these pages, but be warned, evil lurks here as well."
"The Tale-Spinner's Corner is back that way," she continues, pointing back the way she came. "It rather resmbles the Mimic's Chest, except it contains stories of your own making and creation . . . even I, the librarian, do not know all that lurks there. Venture into the back shelves, it shall be well worth your while, but don't forget to bring along one of the lanterns. It shall be your guide and light your way from the depths of creation."
She taps the other book lightly. "This is The Tome of Legends - a book filled with intelligent banter of those oft loved tales of rings and drow, and many other things. Open the covers and delve deeply, enjoy the varied arguments found within."
"Finally, the Gazetteer's Table." She motions to a table covered in thick books and newsprint. "Facts have their place here, apart from the fantasy. I'll ask you to keep them seperate, as they tend to get in rather bloody fights with one another, and I like to keep an orderly library."
"Those are the basic areas of my domain. Please wander freely and openly, to experience all it has to offer. Welcome," she finishes, with a sweeping bow, "to The Library."
