In an attempt to get at least some basic discussion going, I'm starting a fairly generic thread here - who is your favorite character from any of Tolkien's works and why? Mine would be Glorfindel. Sadly, he made next to no appearance in the movies, but he was ostentatiously in The Fellowship of the Ring and the Silmarillion. Glorfindel is one of the oldest Elf Lords. He is the one who saved Frodo at Baranduin. I adore him because, frankly, he's a bad-ass, as well as being noble and amazingly clever without being too arrogant. Who else dukes it out with a Balrog, kills it and dies, and then gets resurrected by the Valar? (Apart from Gandalf, that is ) "Glorfindel was tall and straight; his hair was of shining gold, his face fair and young and fearless and full of joy; his eyes were bright and keen, and his voice like music; on his brow sat wisdom, and in his hand was strength" - Fellowship Now, post your loves!

Don't you think you mean the River Bruinen? Bruinen is the one that runs through Rivendell, The Brandywine is the one that runs through the Shire. Also, while the hero of Gondolin was called Glorfindel there's nothing to say it's the same one. His resurrection isn't actually written anywhere. It's an assumption made by many of us due to Tolkien not having name-duplicates in other places (iirc). Mind I agree he's the same Glorfindel, but it doesn't say so anywhere but in fan writings I have a great weakness for Elrond, myself. The elf lord with an attitude to match his dark hair colour The leader of the council and regularly called the wisest among the elves. That's gotta count for something - yes, I totally fall for intelligence hehe.

I actually hunted about for that very same information on Glorfindel - turns out Christopher Tolkien says that they weren't intended to be the same character but his father had his notes muddled or somesuch, and gave them the same name, then conceded to it being the same character. And I pulled Baranduin right out of Fellowship at that part, lemme check again . . . lmfao. Turns out I can't read. Thanks, Jem .

Hm, I'm not nearly as well read in Middle-Earth lore, but I have read the main 4 books. I'd have to say out of those, I really like Gandalf and Aragorn. If Sauron made more of an appearance, I'd like him I'm sure, but Tolkien really did not characterize the villains overly so...same goes for the Witch King. Gandalf, just because he's witty, brave, and powerful, and Aragorn for pretty much the same qualities (plus being able to snag an elven girl )

BoH,Sauron makes a few appereances in Silmarillion but I liked to read about him in the Unfinished Tales because he is an advisor to the last kings of Numenor, and the reason for Numenor disaster.
As for me,my favourite is Tom Bombadil just because I would like to live like him. This mainly aims at his lay back attitude and not caring what goes around the world.I would like to live like that
