Someone, somewhere, must’ve angered a particularly irritable god for rain poured down in merciless sheets upon the city of Luskan, and so it had for the past few days. Catti-brie held no regard for the nasty weather; her only concern was the presence of the inescapable danger, an unrelenting threat that breathed down the delicate hairs of her neck no matter how fast she ran. Worse, she couldn’t stop running. If she were to stop, even slow down, she would die. She knew that death itself was pursuing her.
Her boots slammed into the flooded ground with each step, splashing water all the way up to her thighs. It wouldn’t have mattered; she was soaked clean to the bone from head to toe. Her stringy red hair slapped wetly against her face, stinging the skin with each sharp impact. She ignored that pain, as she also ignored the burning in her legs and lungs.
The shadows continued to glide effortlessly behind her. She couldn’t see them for all the rain and a strange blue haze that seemed to cover the entire world. She would not be able to evade the shadows. All she could do was run.
Until she was suddenly thrown off balance. A small scream of desperate protest ripped out of Catti-brie as a misstep hooked one foot over the other and she was flung forward. Mud and water sloshed all over her when she hit, the liquid tinged with pink from deep scrapes along her flesh.
Tears mixed with dirt and blood, not from the pain she felt, but rather her utter terror. Goosebumps dominated her frozen flesh, and while the temperature was warm for the season, she trembled violently. She heard the whisper of wind, brushing ever so softly against her ear.
Here. The shadows were here.
She wanted to scream, to go ballistic, do something. But she was frozen. Frozen in her fear, her helplessness. The shadows filled her vision; she felt a hand touch her face, long fingers tracing the curves of her face, running seductively along her jaw and down her slender neck. The fingers were soon replaced with the white hot tip of a blade sliding precariously up and down her throat. Up and down. Up and down. Teasing the vulnerable flesh with the seduction of death.
She couldn’t see. There was nothing. Nothing.
Catti-brie jumped, body stiff and numb, when she felt lips upon hers. Perhaps it was because she was so frightened that she found herself sinking into that embrace. She gasped when she felt a sharp pang on her bottom lip, tasting saliva and thick coppery blood when the shadow forced itself inside her mouth, rotating slowly, agonizingly slowly, making her body writhe in freezing torture.
Lightning flashed blindingly overhead, and when Catti-brie managed to open her eyes, she found herself lying on her bed in the room she had rented for the night. Sitting up, feeling confused, she looked around the room as the cold rain continued to beat against the closed window.
A dream. That’s all it had been. She was warm, she was dry, and most of all, she was safe.
She gasped loudly, pain shooting through her when she accidentally bit down on her bottom lip. Catti-brie’s eyes widened when she felt thick blood ooze from the reopened wound. She could still remember vividly the icy kiss and the face of the deadly assassin that had given it to her.
