The young man stopped by the gas station at around 6:30 on the last Tuesday in May. He drove a red convertible, and had his hood down. The gas station attendant, mid twenties, stoned and apathetic, dimly recalls that the young man was dressed in a nice suit and sunglasses, and had this awful, beaming smile. He paid for his gas, and continued heading north. The attendant vaguely remembers that words were exchanged during the transaction, something on the lines of been here long and where were you headed and I’m going to see my girlfriend.
The road taken by the young man flirts briefly with a sheer cliff overlooking sea and rocks. It is a considerable drop from that road to the waves below. This road is the one less traveled. It is reputed for being unnecessarily dangerous and unnecessarily scenic. Quite a few drivers have met their ends at the bottom of this drop; the guardrail is unable to prevent a sudden loss of control and a subsequent far away flash of light and flame. The road is currently under redesigning and possible rerouting. There is a designated scenic overlook marked by a sign about two miles in, where many couples have stopped to watch the sun go to its watery bed. There are plans to distort this view in order to erect a fence. When the young man stopped here, to first take a picture of the sign, and then take a picture of the sunset, there was only a railing overlooking the water. His sunset picture was apparently taken standing on top this railing.
In his car, points of interest found include: an envelop enclosing a letter addressed to his girlfriend; a letter addressed to him and from his girlfriend; his wallet, with loose bills not totaling a hundred dollars, a picture of who must be his girlfriend, and the young man’s driver’s license, locating his residence as somewhere in Nevada; a box holding a ring with a single diamond in it; and other more mundane objects, typically found in a car (spare prescription sunglasses, driving gloves, flashlight, first-aid kit, umbrella, tire jack, jumper cables, insurance, etc). The car, a ’06 Volkswagen Eos with leather seats, and all wheel drive, is registered to him, and there are only a few payments left on it. The interior was left uncluttered, and the car was newly waxed. The license plate confirms the young man as a resident of Nevada. Though another car could have easily stopped by, the evidence shows that this is unlikely as the car was still there with the doors unlocked, the key in the ignition, and the wallet present; no signs of foul play.
So we can imagine that this young man, after taking these pictures, sending them to a recipient and setting the cell phone down on the railing, took a deep breath of fresh air, took one last look at that sunset, took his sunglasses off…
Then took a step into space.
